Experience the real Maldives (and do that on a budget)

Image
Thoddo island No matter what, I bet there is not a person in the world who has never dreamed of visiting the Maldives and swim in the pristine waters of their sea among colorful fishes and corals. But for most of us, normal people (with normal salaries), this has stayed a dream for a very long time (with the exclusion of those that decided to invest all their wedding presents in an unforgettable honeymoon), and for others (including me), the idea of spending a lot of money to stay in a private resort has never been completely convincing.  Maldives Things have changed recently and, while before those wanting to travel to these amazing islands were forced to choose a resort, now the local government has granted the opportunity to stay at some 'fishermen islands'. This means that you can find bed and breakfasts and guest houses, comfortable accommodations, other than the classic more or less luxurious resort on a private island. Of course, you'll have to forget the...

15 days itinerary in Western Sicily

Image
The best of Western Sicily in 15 days. Sicily is an amazing destination, one of the most beautiful and diverse island I have ever seen. It offers a bit of everything: UNESCO World Heritage sites , wild and serene landscapes, white beaches and rocky coves, emerald waters, and roaring volcanoes. And then amazing food and delicious wines. Here is our suggested itinerary to cover the western side of the island in 15 days. The best way to move around is by car. Easy, flexible and it gives you total freedom. Driving in Sicily is not difficult at all, although I have to admit Sicilians seem to drive quite fast, even for Italian standards and may be quite adventurous when it comes to take over. But if you keep yourself within speed limits and pay a bit of extra attention, there won’t be any problem. For this itinerary, your best option is to fly in and out of Palermo . DAY 1-2-3: SCOPELLO This little hamlet, less than an hour drive from Palermo airport, makes an excellent bas...

Drink your way through the Dordogne

Image
Viticulture has a long history in the Dordogne : the vine arrived here with the emergence of the Gallo- Roman civilization. And, although in the 12th century production was often neglected in favor of food crops, the wine trade resumed in the 17th century. The vineyard extended throughout the department until the late 19th century when the outbreak of phylloxera destroyed most of the vineyards reducing the whole surface to one fifth of the total. The vine came back to life in the 20th century on both banks of the river Dordogne in the area of Bergerac and Duras, but it’s in the last 20 years that wine production became more refined and reached a wider attention with various wines awarded in French competitions and the advance of organic and biodynamic techniques. Vines, Dordogne Vines, Dordogne Vineyards now cover more than 12,000 hectares under 9 appellations and produce 5 different types of wine: red, rosé, dry white, medium sweet white (moelleux) and dessert wine. The de...

Hiking in the Dordogne

Image
The Dordogne, a hikers paradise The Dordogne is one of the top destinations for those that want to explore the rural side of France, and, besides the amazing castles , the medieval villages, the astonishing prehistoric art and the colorful farmers markets full of exquisite local products, this region offers lush landscapes made of green rolling hills, quiet valleys and beautiful forests. Walking along the paths in this generous countryside, other than being an excellent exercise, is a joy for the heart and the eyes!  And, if you like hiking, the region proposes approximately 780 kilometers of long hiking trails and 4000 kilometers of short ones that will offer you the chance to explore this beautiful scenarios scattered with golden stone hamlets that seem to be lost in time and space.  3 different variants of Way of Saint James cross the Dordogne Valley leading pilgrims and walkers to the vertiginous city of Rocamadour . But our favourite long walk in the region is...
