Travel Around The Clock

We entered that secondary road on the outskirts of Fethiye, on the South Western Coast of Turkey, looking for a bit of adventure and maybe one of those solitary beaches not included in the guide books and just used by locals. It took only few minutes’ drive among the Mediterranean flora to find the first village. Somehow it had a strange atmosphere; a couple of restaurants at the entrance were all we could notice. It was calm and silent, almost in a shocking way, compared to the hustle and bustle of Fethiye with its tacky souvenir shops and its noisy touristy restaurants. Only a few extra meters and the hill on our left disclosed the desolated panorama of hundreds of abandoned houses.  Kayakoy We suddenly decided that the beach could wait and stopped for a walk. Our favourite mean of transport when traveling is always car. And the reason is that it makes us independent: we are free to stop whenever and wherever we want and we can create our route unrestrictedly, that is always the best part of a trip preparation.  Last but not least, it gives us full responsibility of our destiny, which we find much better than putting our lives in a crazy bus driver's hands! We have been driving anywhere we have been and it has always been quite an experience. Sometimes a dangerous experience but, for us, it works perfectly. The most amusing side of it, is what you can see around you and all the weird things that you can capture... We had the chance to encounter a few characters on our trips, such as the street food stall on the motorbike and the salad transporter of Indonesia.... ....or the 2 men trying to saw the road (don't ask why?!) But there is more to that....a few political creative drawings and boards.... ...

It passed then into Byzantine and finally Turkish hands until it was completely abandoned around the 13th century. The city is located on a dramatic and spectacular hill at the feet of Mykale mount. It looks like a ghost town and has a mystic and magic vibe. The silence and atmosphere that we encountered in this site is something very difficult to find in any other archaeological site in Turkey. The Hellenistic theatre is one of the best example of its kind and very well preserved. It is characterised by 5 armchairs seats decorated with anthropomorphic figures and has beautiful back stage constructions partially intact, which is extremely rare.
